Gwyneth Paltrow: A Fan of Epsom Salt

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow may have received criticism for her healthy living Goop website, but it hasn’t stopped her from putting it to good use. According to reports, she recently offered some beauty advice using products that can be found at home.

She wrote on the website, “I love Epsom salt baths to detox, revive muscles and de-puff skin. While in the bath, I use an exfoliating mitt (the kind used in Korean bath houses – you can get them at beauty supply stores, Asian markets or health food stores).”

Paltrow also revealed that after her bath she likes to rub some extra virgin organic coconut oil onto her skin. In Paltrow’s words, it “literally melts on your skin.” Fans will get to see for themselves the benefits of Paltrow’s homemade beauty tips when Iron Man 2 hits theaters in 2010.

If only we could see the future

Someone once said, if there’s a life plan mapped out for us, it’s based around some pretty complicated architecture.

How many times have you said to yourself: who would have thought a year ago that I would be sitting here doing this or that?

The one thing you can expect in life is the unexpected. So how do you deal with it? How do you manage when things don’t go quite the way you planned?
What do you do about life’s little emergencies?  Here are some thoughts.

1. React. Don’t overreact. When little things go wrong we tend to see them as catastrophic. Keep things in perspective. As they say, things are often never as bad as they seem.

Seeing things through their eyes

We all like to think we had a happy childhood. Of all the things we want for our children, happiness probably tops the list.  But, it can be tough being a kid. There are moments of tears, moments your children trip and hurt themselves, and, moments they’re just plain fed up. ‘I’m bored mom!’ How many times have you heard that? We’d like to share some thoughts that five different moms shared with us.

1. Get down on your knees and talk to your kids at their height. Really. It’s amazing to look at a room from the eye level of a child. It’s a simple way to literally see things from their perspective.

2. Don’t just say ‘no’. Explain why. Sometimes it’s tempting to simply say: ‘because I said so!’ But, when you take a few seconds to explain why, you stand more chance of resonating with your child. This isn’t a new age-y sentiment to treat your child as an equal; that’s not necessarily good. It’s simply trying to talk on a rational level. Caution: This approach will not always work!

3. Tell them jokes. Sounds crazy we know. But one mom we spoke to has compiled a book of jokes just for her kids. She has a joke for every occasion. When her children are bored, concerned or sad, she lightens the mood. She tells a joke and encourages her child to tell one back. She finds her kids open up and say what’s really on their minds.

Five secrets of never letting it show

They say a mom is the glue that holds the family together. So how does a mom hold herself together? Here are five thoughts to get you through the roller coaster days that are a part of every great mom’s life.  These will help keep your sunny side on display.

1. Breath in, breath out. Fill your body with oxygen and it will clear your mind. If you’ve just made the bed, sit on it for a few minutes. A few minutes to yourself now will seem like hours later. So take those few minutes whenever you can. And that will help you deal with ‘stuff’ as the day progresses.

2. Make a list. Sounds simple but most of us don’t do it. If you have five important things to do and you haven’t written them down, it will feel as if you have twenty-five things to do. You might end up not doing any of the five things well; the anxiety will show.

3. Add a pleasure to a task. Listen to music while you’re organizing laundry. Phone your sister while you’re shopping. If you’re online researching something for your child’s school project, book a hair appointment.  Work-time flies when you’re having fun.

4. Do something only for you. Maybe it’s a new lotion you find when you’re grocery shopping, or, spending time rearranging your own closet instead of tidying up the kids’ closets. A small act of kindness to yourself once a day will have you feeling good and looking better.

5. Say thank you every day. Your family is blessed to have you. And you’re blessed to have them. All of them and everything about them. They are your life and they’re worth smiling about.
